EN/ I love the provincial charm and the calmness in Görlitz, the countless beautiful corners, the unbelievably rich offer of culinary options for vegans for such a small city (thank you Kochwerk, Café Herzstück, Café Kugel, Rabryka, Bio am Bahnhof, Obermühle!), the city library, the Neisse River, the many really nice playgrounds, the visions for the future, the many green spaces, the short distances, the potential for creative people, the dreamlike surrounding countryside.

I hope that Görlitz – and Saxony in general – will appreciate its position in the middle of Europe more than focusing on being at the eastern edge of Germany. Görlitz in particular can become an important hub for infrastructure and culture in the Central European border triangle. It would be great for the city if more film projects were implemented here, so that an international audience can get to know Görlitz and enrich it. I hope that Görlitz will remain a city with the potential for discovery and that more and more young people will to get to know the beauty and realize the possibilities of the city and want to live and work here. And that it will be possible. I especially hope that cultural institutions such as the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater, the Rabryka and the Kühlhaus will remain in the city and not fall victim to any cutbacks or political games.

EN/ I was born on the Polish side and back then whenever we drove back from the Bavarian-Swabian border where we visited family, I would roll down the car window as soon as Görlitz came into view, I would breathe in the air and say: I’m finally back home. After 37 years I decided to return here and start a new life.I love the partly ramshackle old buildings and ruins and the lively nature and ease of the people. In contrast to Bavaria and Swabia, people here strive to be happy with less. I find that good and also right and important.

I hope that the flair and beauty of the city remain alive.

EN/ I have lived in Görlitz – the birthplace of my parents, who moved to West Germany immediately after World War 2 – since the summer of 2017. They always told me about the beauty of the city during my childhood, but it wasn’t until 2015 – many years after their deaths – that I got to know the city during a vacation trip. It was love at first sight and I decided to make a “forever” commitment and move here.

I love many things about Görlitz: the architecture, the people, the proximity to Poland and the Czech Republic, the varied landscape in the immediate vicinity and, of course, Lake Berzdorf. But above all, for me, Görlitz is the city in Germany with the best prospects for the future. Within the next ten years, Görlitz will become known worldwide as an attractive research location and offer good job opportunities for top international scientists. Everyone will benefit from this positive development: Innovative ideas from research and science will meet the service competence of business here, and together both sides will promote Görlitz as a location for innovation.

I hope – no I’m actually quite certain – that in the future Görlitz will not only remain attractive in the context of tourism and as a location for TV and cinema films, but will also increasingly be seen as a modern science and business-friendly location.

21. Juli

DE/ Ich bin sehr zufällig in Görlitz gelandet.

EN/ I ended up in Görlitz by chance. It was on a day trip where I saw the city for the first time and thought that maybe I could do my internship here. As a result, I got to know Görlitz a little bit better, especially from an architectural point of view, and then my husband and I decided that we would like to live here.

We started buying, renovating and renting out old ruins and houses here. I think it’s really nice to bring new life into old, ruinous houses that have no ceilings and where everything has been destroyed. There’s a lot to do for an architect and you get to know a lot of interesting people. What’s nice here is that you feel like part of a community. No matter where you go, you know the faces and everyone knows each other. You notice that after a few years and I think it’s great that you aren’t as anonymous as in big cities. You know everyone here.

I hope that Görlitz will continue to develop. We need more residents who can inhabit and revitalize the vacant houses. For that we simply need industrial development. I hope that Görlitz will develop as a center between Wroclaw, Prague and Dresden.

EN/ What I associate with Görlitz are memories. Memories of great times and of bad times. Home. I’ve spent my whole life here, and in retrospect, even if as a teenager we would complain about this “boring city”, I still love it.

I love the size of Görlitz. I love the quiet, the wonderful places it has to offer and especially the old town.

I very much hope that Görlitz will manage to rid itself of this “right” image at some point. This wonderful city is so discredited by it. I also hope that after this difficult time, clubs can continue to exist. That if it looks bad for them financially, the city will help. It would be a shame if we don’t have any other options to break away from typical everyday life in this way for a few hours.

EN/ I moved to Görlitz last year for work, but I’ve known Görlitz all my life because I’m from Upper Lusatia. It really is the pearl of Upper Lusatia. Görlitz is a beautiful city and offers a variety of cultural opportunities, sometimes even more than you think and it’s great. You often hear things like “there’s nothing going on here” and so on, but if you really look at what there is to do in Görlitz, it’s clearly more than you see at first glance – really diverse offers, especially in cultural areas.

I really love the opportunities we have here. Besides the high culture, you also have low-threshold offers, there are student clubs and they regularly offer things for the students.  Also recreational activities like Nostromo and Basta. We really have a diverse culture, from low-threshold to really high-caliber, and that’s exactly what I love, that you have so many opportunities here to develop personally and you can participate everywhere.

EN/ I love Görlitz because it’s my hometown, because my roots are here and I see Görlitz as the center of a Garden of Eden. You have valleys, mountains, rivers, low mountain ranges, high mountain ranges, everything you can think of can be reached in 100 km. Everything is central, where everyone can get there. We have a lot of green spaces, a lot of trees, parks, etc. We are a city in the green. I can’t judge whether another city is like this, but that’s how I see it. And that’s what makes Görlitz for me, and I’m happy to be here. There is always something going on in Görlitz. I live in the old town where there’s a lot happening. I’ve always liked that. This is my element. Görlitz also has the very first roundabout that ever existed, on Brautwiesenplatz. Görlitz used to be a civil service town, and every house has a story. You can tell from every house that the wealthy once lived there.

7. Juli

EN/ Many wonderful memories from my childhood connect me with this city. I was with my grandmother often in the old town of Görlitz where she lived. Even as a child I was fascinated by the old houses, alleys and corners. Today I still like to walk through these places and admire how within the last decades old grey houses have been transformed into wonderful treasures, true pearls.

But that’s not the only thing that makes Görlitz special: there is a very large and varied cultural program which not only serves the people here, but also attracts them from all over the surrounding area.

In addition, we have a very good infrastructure and good connections. If you want, you can reach everything necessary on foot or by public transport. Görlitz is a very green city with many parks and green areas. We have many recreational and leisure opportunities in the area, whether it’s the Upper Lusatian mountains for hiking or skiing, or the Berzdorf Lake for swimming, sports and recreation, and diverse cultural offerings.

It’s my wish and hope that my hometown will attract more young people, families, artists and people with creative ideas, visions and concepts. This would stimulate the city and help to make it more lively, more colorful, family-friendly and diverse. Also more networking and cooperation with regional suppliers, traders and business leaders in this region, including in Zgorzelec would bring our city and its district more opportunities, diversity and perhaps even prosperity.

2. Juli

EN/ We moved as a German-Polish couple from Berlin to Görlitz three years ago after we ended our professional lives. We saw a lot of positive things about the city on television and the proximity to Poland and the Czech Republic did the rest. We haven’t regretted leaving Berlin after forty years.

We love the old houses, the narrow streets and the closeness to nature. It never gets boring to explore the city. The many squares are lovingly replanted every year and the Berzdorf Lake is a jewel. The cultural offers are also great, once the pandemic allows it again. We are particularly looking forward to that.

We hope that more young people will come to Görlitz, that the ICE route will be expanded in order to better reach airports, because we travel a lot, and we hope that medical care will be improved. We haven’t given up hope of still getting to see the reopening of the Stadthalle or the Kaufhaus.

30. Juni

EN/ I grew up in Görlitz and lived here for a long time and after a few detours within Germany, my family found its way back to Görlitz. I associate this city with many beautiful childhood memories and I would like the same for my children.

I love the size of the city. There are great leisure activities for both young and old. I like to sit in the little cafes and I love the zoo!

I would like to see more lightness for the city, more courage to tackle things and more people who are committed to an open, colorful and tolerant Görlitz. I hope that Görlitz will also become more attractive for young people and that this will lead to more and more people actively choosing Görlitz as a place to live.
