DE/ Da ich erst vor zwei Jahren nach Görlitz gezogen bin, verbindet mich mit der Stadt noch keine tiefgehende Verwurzlung. Trotzdem bietet Görlitz jedem die Möglichkeit, schnell Kontakte zu knüpfen. Deshalb sind es für mich auch in erster Linie persönliche Beziehungen, die mich mit Görlitz verbinden.

Für mich ist Görlitz wie eine Art Verbindungsstück zwischen bodenständiger Dörflichkeit und geistiger Offenheit, wie sie in Großstädten vorzufinden ist. Einerseits kann man hier alle Vorteile des Dorflebens genießen – zur Ruhe kommen, die Natur genießen, Vereinsleben unterschiedlicher Couleur zelebrieren oder Freundschaften schließen, die eben nicht nur auf Flüchtigkeit beruhen. Andererseits aber gibt es durchaus auch eine städtische Atmosphäre, die sich in einem reichhaltigen Kulturangebot, der großen Auswahl an tollen Restaurants und Gaststätten sowie den vielen innovativen Projekten junger Menschen widerspiegelt.

Ich hoffe, dass Görlitz seine einzigartige Bodenständigkeit bewahrt und nicht versucht, zu einem zweiten Leipzig oder Berlin zu werden. Zugleich wünsche ich mir Arbeitsplatzsicherheit und Wohlstand für die Menschen hier. Und eine etwas optimistischere Grundmentalität.

EN/ Since I only moved to Görlitz two years ago, I am not yet deeply rooted to the city. Nevertheless, Görlitz offers everyone the opportunity to make contacts quickly. That’s why for me it’s personal relationships above all that connect me to the city.

For me, Görlitz is like a kind of link between down-to-earth rurality and intellectual openness, like what you’d find in big cities. On the one hand, you can enjoy all the advantages of a village life here: to relax, enjoy nature, celebrate the diverse club and society life or make friendships that are not just based on impermanence. On the other hand, there’s also an urban atmosphere, which is reflected in a rich cultural offer, the large selection of great restaurants and pubs and the many innovative projects by young people.

I hope that Görlitz will keep its unique down-to-earth attitude and not try to become a second Leipzig or Berlin. At the same time, I would like more job security and prosperity for the people here. And a slightly more optimistic mindset.

DE/ Ich bin in Görlitz geboren. Meine Wurzeln sind hier. Ich liebe die Architektur, die kurzen Wege, die Menschen in Görlitz und die vielen verschiedenen kulturellen Möglichkeiten. Die landschaftliche Lage ist sehr schön.

Ich wünsche mir noch mehr Zusammenwachsen und Austausch mit dem polnischen Teil der Stadt, damit alte Kriegswunden heilen können. Und einen noch offeneren Umgang mit Neuem.

EN/ I was born in Görlitz. My roots are here. I love the architecture, the short distances, the people in Görlitz and the many different cultural opportunities. The scenic location is very beautiful.

I would like to see more growing together and exchange with the Polish part of the city so that old war wounds can heal. And an even more open approach to new things.

DE/ Wie wichtig mir Görlitz ist und wie sehr ich an dieser Stadt hänge, habe ich erst festgestellt, als ich eine Weile in Holland gelebt habe. Wenn ich dann hier auf Urlaub gekommen bin, hatte ich dieses Gefühl, sobald die Landeskrone in Sicht kam, dass ich wieder zuhause bin.

Ich habe hier Verkäuferin gelernt und habe demzufolge noch ganz viele Menschen kennengelernt und verbinde eigentlich mit dieser Stadt nur Positives. Selbst mit den Neuzugezogenen muss ich sagen, dass ich überhaupt keine schlechten Erfahrungen gemacht habe. Im Gegenteil.

Diese Altstadt ist für mich was ganz Besonderes. Ich liebe die Peterskirche. Ich gehe unheimlich gerne rein, setz mich ein paar Minuten hin und genieße die Ruhe und die Schönheit dieser Kirche. Früher sind wir immer Sonntag hierhergekommen und meine Mutti hat uns dann die ganzen Sagen erzählt.

Ich werde nie vergessen, wie hier der Märchenfilm „Gevatter Tod“ gedreht wurde. Da war dann hier so ein richtiges Markttreiben und wir haben beobachtet, wie da gedreht wurde. Das fand ich irre faszinierend und man bekommt erstmal einen Eindruck, wie alt diese Stadt ist. Ich war ganz stolz, schon als Kind.

Ich wünsche mir vor allem, dass die Menschen wieder so werden wie sie mal waren: aufgeschlossener, freundlicher. Ich wünsche mir ganz sehr, dass die Entscheidungen schneller fallen, die für die Zukunft der Stadt sprechen. Görlitz ist schon eine alte Stadt, was der Bevölkerung trifft und es muss verhindert werden, dass unsere Jugend abwandert, einfach weil sie hier keinerlei Perspektiven hat.

EN/ I first realized how important Görlitz is to me and how much I am attached to this city when I lived in Holland for a while. When I came here on vacation, I had this feeling as soon as the Landeskrone came into view, that I was back home.

I learned sales here and as a result I got to know a lot of people and I truly only associate this city with positive things. Even with the newcomers, I have to say that I haven’t had any bad experiences at all. On the contrary.

This old town is something very special to me. I love the Peterskirche. I love to go inside, sit down for a few minutes and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of this church. We used to come here on Sundays and my mom told us all the legends.

I will never forget how the fairy tale “Gevatter Tod” was filmed here. There was a real hustle and bustle on the market square and we watched the filming. I found it incredibly fascinating and you first get an idea of how old this city is. I was very proud, even as a child.

Above all, I wish for people to be the way they used to be: more open-minded, friendlier. I very much hope that decisions that speak for the future of the city will be made more quickly. Görlitz is already an old city, in regards to the population, and it must be prevented that our youth migrate, simply because they have no prospects here.

DE/ Ich bin ein bisschen mit der Stadt großgeworden. Sie hat mich einfach groß geprägt, von meiner Mentalität her, in meiner Art wie ich bin – die Sachen etwas lockerer zu nehmen und nicht alles immer allzu ernst zu sein.

Ich habe mit der Altstadt auch ein bisschen Historie. Den Nikolaiturm persönlich ausgebaut hat mein Opa. Er hatte früher im Verein gearbeitet, der den Nikolaiturm auch geführt hatte.

Ich bin sehr aktiv in Sportvereinen und da stoße ich selten auf verschlossene Türen. Man setzt sich gern an den Tisch und sagt sich „lass uns was zusammen machen“ anstatt, dass man gleich sagt: „nö, das geht nicht“.

Am meisten würde ich mir halt wünschen, das Jugendleben ein wenig zu beleben. Ich bin aktuell Student in Chemnitz. Ich musste meine Heimat verlassen (was ich nicht unbedingt wollte), weil es hier meinen Studiengang nicht gibt. Wenn man bei der Hochschule ein bisschen mehr Studenten reinbringen könnte und diese dann hier halten kann, indem man die entsprechenden Berufe ausbaut, damit wäre wahrscheinlich sehr viel getan.

EN/ I sort of grew up with the city. It’s just shaped me a lot, like my mentality – the way I take things a little looser and not always too seriously.

I also have a bit of history with the old town. My grandfather personally developed the Nikolai Tower. He used to work in the association that also ran the Nikolai Tower.

I am very active in sports clubs and I rarely come across locked doors. People like to sit down at the table and say, “let’s do something together” instead of saying straight away, “nope, that won’t work”.

Most of all I wish we could liven things up for the youth a little. I am currently a student in Chemnitz. I had to leave my home (which I didn’t really want) because they don’t have my degree course here. If they could bring some more students to the university and keep them here by developing the relevant professions, that would probably do a lot.

DE/ Görlitz und ich – wir sind sozusagen gemeinsam (auf)gewachsen. Als Kind lief ich oft durch die Straßen und ich erinnere mich noch gut an die grauen Häuserfassaden mit dem abgebröckelten Putz. Stück für Stück ist die Stadt zu einer Persönlichkeit herangewachsen. Parallel zu diesem Prozess verlief auch mein Lebensweg. Ich habe Erfahrungen gesammelt und auch an anderen Orten gelebt, aber ich habe Görlitz immer im Blick behalten. Nun lebe ich seit ein paar Jahren wieder hier und profitiere von der positiven Entwicklung der Stadt.

Ich frage mich oft, wie wohl die Görlitzer Stadtgesellschaft vor 500 Jahren hier gelebt haben muss und ich mag, dass die vielen historischen Gebäude und Plätze einen Bezug zu dieser Vergangenheit zulassen. Außerdem liebe ich die Nähe zu Polen – ich muss nur ein paar Meter laufen und ich kann in eine andere Kultur eintauchen.

Ich wünsche mir für meine Geburtsstadt, dass sie noch selbstbewusster wird. Görlitz ist in vielerlei Hinsicht ein Schmuckstück und darauf können wir alle stolz sein.

EN/ Görlitz and I – we grew (up) together, so to speak. As a child I often walked the streets and I remember the gray house facades and the crumbling plaster. Bit by bit, the city has grown into a personality. My life path also ran parallel to this process. I gained experience and lived in other places, but I always kept an eye on Görlitz. I’ve been living here again for a few years now and benefit from the positive development of the city.

I often ask my self how the society of Görlitz must have lived here 500 years ago and I like that the many historical buildings and squares allow a reference to this past. I also love the proximity to Poland – I only have to walk a few meters and I can immerse myself in a different culture.

I would like the city of my birth to become even more self-confident. Görlitz is a gem in many ways and we can all be proud of that.

DE/ Ich bin hier aufgewachsen, und Görlitz ist einfach meine Heimat und von Anfang an etwas Besonderes für mich. Ich muss sagen, seitdem ich weggezogen bin (ich wohne momentan eigentlich in Dresden), habe ich das nochmal besonders zu schätzen gelernt, dass diese Stadt so schön ist. Ich habe auch gemerkt, wie wohl ich mich hier fühle und deswegen bin ich so oft wie es geht hier, weil meine ganze Familie und Freunde auch hier wohnen und so viele Erinnerungen mit der Stadt verbunden sind.

Ich meine, Görlitz hat die perfekte Größe. Ich muss sagen, Dresden ist mir ein bisschen zu groß. Hier kann man oft seine Ruhe haben. Ich liebe die kleinen Cafés, die es hier gibt und einfach dieses Gefühl, in einem Café zu sitzen und zu arbeiten, die schönen Straßen zu sehen, die Architektur…

Ich finde es sehr faszinierend, wie viele Menschen es hier gibt, die Musik machen. Ich hoffe, dass Görlitz weiterhin so kulturell bleibt und dass es weiterhin so viele musikalische Menschen gibt.

EN/ I grew up here and Görlitz is simply my home and has been special to me from the start. I have to say that since I moved away (I actually live in Dresden at the moment), I’ve come to appreciate the beauty of this city. I also noticed how comfortable I feel here and that’s why I am here as often as possible, because all my family and friends also live here and so many memories are connected to the city.

I think Görlitz is the perfect size. I have to say that Dresden is a little too big for me. You can often have your peace here. I love all the little cafes and just that feeling of sitting and working in a café, seeing the beautiful streets, the architecture…

I find it fascinating how many people there are here who make music. I hope that Görlitz will stays so cultural and that there will continue to be so many musical people.

DE/ Ich bin hier geboren, genau zur 900. Jahrfeier der Stadt Görlitz und ich will hier definitiv nicht weg, weil das einfach meine Heimatstadt ist und bleiben wird. Es ist klein, gemütlich, überschaubar, nie dieser Großstadtstress. Die Stadt hat sich entwickelt über die Jahre, wo ich einfach sage: „ich will nirgendwo anders hin.“ Ich hoffe, dass die Stadt sich weiter so positiv entwickelt, gerade auch mit dem Berzdorfer See und hoffe auch, dass mit dem Thema Gesundheit und Pandemie das alles mal wieder vernünftig wird. Schön wäre, wenn wir die 950. Jahrfeier hinkriegen würden.

EN/ I was born here during the year of the 900^th anniversary of Görlitz and I definitely don’t want to leave here because it is, and will remain, my hometown. It’s small, cozy, manageable, never any of that big city stress. The city has developed over the years, and I can say: “I don’t want to go anywhere else.” I hope that the city will continue to develop so positively, especially with Lake Berzdorf, and I also hope that in regards to the topic of health and the pandemic, that everything becomes reasonable again. It would be nice if we could manage to celebrate the 950^th anniversary.

DE/ Ich bin seit über einem Jahr in Görlitz. Ich bin mit meinem Bruder hierhergezogen. Er hat hier ein Unternehmen gegründet und ich wollte einen Job als Ingenieur. In Italien gibt es nicht viele Angebote, aber hier habe ich sehr nette und respektvolle Menschen gefunden.

Wir haben uns in diese Stadt verliebt. Jede Ecke der Stadt erzählt eine Geschichte. Man kann zu Fuß nach Polen gelangen! Wir haben auch den See, die Berge, die Landschaft…alles! Und dann ist die geografische Lage perfekt. Deshalb ist es eine Stadt, die für alle Kulturen offen ist, und ich denke, das ist sehr wichtig.

EN/ I have been in Görlitz off and on for over a year. I moved here with my brother. He started a business here and I wanted a job as an engineer. In Italy there aren’t many offers, but here I have found very nice and respectful people.

We have fallen in love with this city. Every corner of the city tells a story. You can get to Poland by walking! We also have the lake, the mountains, the countryside … everything! And then the geographical position is perfect. This is why it is a city open to all cultures and I think this is very important.

DE/ Vor 14 Jahren haben wir ein Miethaus in Görlitz gekauft und saniert – ein wunderschönes Haus aus der Gründerzeit. Wir nutzen immer jede Gelegenheit, nach Görlitz zu kommen. Jedes Mal fühlen wir uns wirklich wie im Urlaub. Die Atmosphäre ist halt anders hier als in Berlin. Es ist so idyllisch hier! Wir laden immer Freunde und Künstler ein, denn wir haben ein Kunstatelier. Meine Freunde sind von der Stadt sehr begeistert.

Die Menschen hier sind sehr freundlich. Wir haben sogar mehr Kontakt mit unseren Nachbarn hier als in Berlin. Ich habe keine negativen Erfahrungen gemacht als Ausländerin hier. Ich bin davon überzeugt, man kann andere Menschen durch Menschlichkeit bewegen. Durch meine Kunstprojekte versuche ich ein bisschen mehr Internationalität nach Görlitz zu tragen.

Künstler können wunderbar hier arbeiten wegen der schönen Lage und der bezahlbaren Miete, aber es gibt leider wenige Galerien und das Publikum fehlt. Es hoffe, es wird in Zukunft mehr Galerien und Möglichkeiten geben, so dass die Künstler auch hier ihre Arbeit ausstellen könnten.

EN/ 14 years ago we bought and renovated an apatment house in Görlitz – a beautiful Gründerzeit house. We always use every opportunity to come to Görlitz. Every time we really feel like we are on vacation. The atmosphere is just different here than in Berlin. It’s so idyllic here! We always invite friends and artists because we have an art studio. My friends are very enthusiastic about the city.

The people here are very friendly. We even have more contact with our neighbors here than in Berlin. I haven’t had any negative experiences as a foreigner here. I am convinced that, through humanity, you can move other people. I try to bring a little bit more internationality to Görlitz with my art projects.

Artists can work wonderfully here because of the beautiful location and affordable rent, but unfortunately there are few galleries and the audience is lacking. Hopefully there will be more galleries and opportunities in the future so that artists can exhibit their work here, too.

DE/ Die Liebe verbindet mich mit dieser Stadt. Meine Frau ist aus Polen, in der Nähe von Zgorzelec, und wir haben uns hier kennengelernt und erst durch sie habe ich Polen kennengelernt. Sie hat mich symbolisch aber auch wirklich an die Hand genommen und hat mir Polen gezeigt und mittlerweile ist Polen jetzt für mich eine zweite Heimat.

Ich liebe, dass man in zwei Welten wandeln kann, dass man in Polen sein kann in zwei Minuten und dass man eigentlich nicht entscheiden muss. Ich mag das Wasser, ich mag die Nähe zu Prag, Breslau und Dresden. Es ist alles keine Entfernung. Und man lebt trotzdem in einer ruhigen schönen sehr abwechslungsreichen Gegend und das gefällt mir sehr.

Letztes Jahr mit dem ersten Lockdown, als die Grenze von polnischer Seite zugemacht wurde, das war hart. Ich hoffe, dass die Stadt wirklich noch mehr zusammenwächst und dass man keinen mehr Unterschied macht zwischen Polen und Deutschen – das sind Görlitzer.

EN/ Love connects me to this city. My wife is from Poland, near Zgorzelec, and we met here and it was only through her that I got to know Poland. She took me by the hand, both literally and figuratively, and showed me Poland and now it has become a second home for me.

I love that you can walk in two worlds, that you can be in Poland in two minutes and that you don’t really have to decide. I like the water, I like the proximity to Prague, Wroclaw and Dresden. It’s all no distance. And still, you live in a quiet, beautiful, very varied area and I like that very much.

Last year with the first lockdown, when the Polish side closed the border, that was tough. I hope that the city will really grow closer and that there will no longer be this distinction between Poland and German – they are people of Görlitz.
