DE/ Ich komme aus Syrien. Ich bin in Görlitz schon ein Jahr mit meiner Familie. Ich finde die Altstadt und die Straßen und die Leute schön. Ich mache jetzt einen Sprachkurs und studiere online, um Fachinformatiker zu werden. In meiner Freizeit mache ich Fotografie – ich fotografiere gern Görlitz.

EN/ I’m from Syria. I‘ve been in Görlitz for one year with my family. I think the old town and the streets and the people are nice. I’m taking a language course and studying online to be an IT specialist. In my free time I do photography – I like to take pictures of Görlitz.

DE/ Görlitz – das ist für mich mehr als nur eine Stadt. Das sind Familie, Freunde, Vereinskameraden, aber auch Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft.

Als IT-Projektleiter und IT-Berater möchte ich die Region und die Unternehmen auf ihrem ganz eigenen Weg der Digitalisierung begleiten. Aus der EDV die IT entwickeln. Görlitz gibt mir dafür die Kraft. Es spendet mir aber auch die Ruhe und Zeit, Familie, Beruf und Hobby zu verbinden. Hier finde ich den Freiraum kreativ sein und etwas Neues ausprobieren zu können.

Für die Zukunft der Stadt wünsche ich mir, dass wir zusammen den Strukturwandel meistern und dabei gemeinsam das Bewusstsein entwickeln, dass wir jemand sind. Das wir stolz sein können, auf die Stadt war, was sie heute ist und was sie morgen sein wird. Ich würde mich freuen, wenn ich mit meinem aktuellen Buch hierzu ein kleinwenig beitragen kann. Persönlich hoffe ich, bei der 1000 Jahrfeier dabei zu sein, dafür halte ich mich gesund!

EN/ Görlitz – for me it’s more than just a city. It’s family, friends, club mates, but also the past, present and future.

As an IT project manager and IT consultant, I would like to accompany the region and companies on their very own path to digitization. Görlitz gives me the power to do this. But it also gives me the peace and time to combine family, job and hobby. Here I find the freedom to be creative and try something new.

For the future of the city, I hope that we will tackle the structural change together and develop the awareness that we are somebody. That we can be proud of what the city was and what it is today and what it will be tomorrow. I would be happy if I can contribute a little with my current book. Personally, I hope to be there at the 1000^th anniversary, that’s why I keep myself healthy!

DE/ Ich bin vor fünfeinhalb Jahren durch die Lust, neues zu entdecken, aus dem Rheinland in die Europastadt Görlitz/ Zgorzelec gezogen.

Hier werden die positiven Effekte der Wiedervereinigung spürbar und erlebbar. Ich liebe auch den Aufbau der Stadt, die Architektur wie aber auch die vielen grünen Flecken, die zu einem modernen Stadtbild dazugehören. Der Leerstand ist ein Vorteil, denn er bietet kreativen Menschen, die mitanpacken möchten, die Möglichkeit, sich zu verwirklichen. Ich liebe auch den Aufbau des historischen Stadtkerns mit all seinen verwinkelten Gassen und Straßenzügen, in denen es auch nach all der Zeit, neues zu entdecken gibt.

Ich hoffe, mehr wirtschaftlicher Aufschwung erreicht die Stadt, ich hoffe, mehr Kreativität erfasst und umgibt die Menschen, ich hoffe, die Menschen entwickeln mehr Lust am Leben, ich hoffe auf ein Weiterwachsen der Demokratie – ich habe die Hoffnung auf noch mehr Europa in der Europastadt Görlitz/Zgorzelec.

EN/ I moved from the Rhineland to the European city of Görlitz / Zgorzelec five and a half years ago because I wanted to discover new things.

Here, the positive effects of reunification can be felt and experienced. I also love the structure of the city, the architecture and the many green spots that are part of a modern cityscape. The vacancies are an advantage, because it gives creative people who want to get involved the opportunity to realize their projects. I also love the structure of the historic city center with all its winding alleys and streets, in which there is still something new to discover after all this time.

I hope that the city will experience an economic upturn. I hope that creativity will capture and surround people, I hope that people will develop more passion for life. I hope that democracy will continue to grow – I hope for even more Europe in the European city of Görlitz / Zgorzelec.

DE/ Ich bin als Austauschstudent hierhergekommen. Leider bin ich gleich zu Beginn der Pandemie gekommen, so dass ich nicht persönlich am Unterricht teilnehmen kann – alles ist online.

Was ich an dieser Stadt liebe, sind die Ansichten und das Stadtbild. Als ich den Bahnhof zum ersten Mal verließ, starrte ich in Ehrfurcht, weil die Stadt eine ganz besondere Atmosphäre hat und die Architektur so schön ist. Ich hatte vor meiner Ankunft nicht wirklich online nach Fotos gesucht, daher war es eine schöne Überraschung. Die ganze Pandemie sitze ich in meinem Zimmer fest, aber der Blick aus meinem Fenster langweilt mich immer noch nicht.

Vielleicht kennen die Leute in Deutschland Görlitz, aber weltweit denke ich, dass mehr Werbung gemacht werden könnte. Ich wusste nur über diesen Ort Bescheid, weil mir mein Austauschprogramm die Möglichkeit anbot. Sonst hätte ich noch nie von Görlitz gehört.

EN/ I came here as an exchange student. Unfortunately, I came right when the pandemic began, so I haven’t been able to attend classes in person – everything has been online.

What I love about this city are the views and the cityscape. The moment I first stepped out of the train station I was awestruck because the city has a very different vibe and the architecture is so nice. I hadn’t really searched online for photos before I came, so it was a nice surprise. The whole pandemic I’ve been stuck in my room, but I still don’t get bored of the view out my window.

Maybe within Germany people know Görlitz, but globally I think more advertising could be done. I only knew about this place because of the options I was given by my exchange program. Otherwise, I would have never heard of Görlitz.

DE/ Ich liebe das schöne, historische, interessante Ensemble der Stadt, besonders die Altstadt, aber auch nicht zu vergessen die Gründerzeithäuser. Schön finde ich, dass durch einen glücklichen Zufall Görlitz im Zweiten Weltkrieg kaum zerstört wurde.

Ich liebe, dass es keine Großstadt ist, dass alles fußläufig innerhalb der Stadt zu erreichen ist, die schönen Parkanlagen, dass Görlitz noch ein Theater hat und im Sommer vor allem auch die Kulturszene, da ist ja immer was los.  

Ich hoffe, dass ich das noch erlebe, dass das Kaufhaus geöffnet wird und auch die Stadthalle, dass dieser Zank und Streit um die Stadthalle aufhört, das ist mein größter Wunsch für die Stadt. 

EN/ I love the beautiful, historic, interesting ensemble of the city, especially the old town, but without forgetting the Wilhelminian style houses. I think it’s great that, by a lucky coincidence, Görlitz was hardly destroyed during WWII.

I love that it’s not a big city, that everything can be reached on foot within the city. I love the beautiful parks, that Görlitz still has a theater and in the summer, especially the cultural scene, that there is always something going on.

I hope that I will still live to see the opening of the Kaufhaus department store and the Stadthalle, that this quarreling and arguing about the Stadthalle will end. This is my greatest wish for the city.

DE/ Görlitz ist meine Heimatstadt. Ich bin hier geboren, aufgewachsen, großgeworden und jetzt ist es die Stadt, wo ich meine eigene Familie gegründet habe.

Ich liebe es, dass diese Stadt noch relativ viele alte Seiten hat und dass sie nach den 90er Jahren langsam wieder aufblüht, speziell was auch die Jugend betrifft, was früher nicht war.  

Die Hoffnung ist, dass eine Generation ranwächst, die ein bisschen offener wird und mehr positive Veränderung reinbringt, die sich halt auch nicht darauf beruft, „das war schon immer so, das bleibt so“, sondern neue Sachen probiert und dadurch neu entwickelt.

EN/ Görlitz is my hometown. I was born and raised here, grew up here and now this is the city where I have started my own family.

I love that this city still has a lot of old aspects and that it is slowly blossoming again since the 90s, especially when it comes to the youth, which wasn’t the case before.

The hope is that a generation will rise up that will become a bit more open and bring in more positive change, one that doesn’t always say “that has always been that way, it will stay that way,” but one that tries new things and redefines itself.

DE/ Ich bin in Görlitz groß geworden, habe hier den Kindergarten und die Schule besucht. Durch die Wendezeit mit dem verbundenen Einbruch musste ich meine Ausbildung in den alten Bundesländern absolvieren, konnte aber danach wieder schnell nach Görlitz zurück und Fuß fassen.

Die Arbeit bei der WGGeG gab mir die Chance, mich weiter zu entwickeln und mich mit meiner Arbeit für die Menschen der Stadt einzubringen.

Ich liebe die historische Altstadt, welche einzigartig ist, aber auch die Außenbezirke einer Stadt sind wichtig und haben ihre Bedeutung und Wichtigkeit. Wohnen im grünen Außenbereich, in ruhigen Wohnlagen, das sollte man in der Stadtpolitik nicht außer Acht lassen. Auch dieser Bedarf muss gedeckt werden, um den Bevölkerungsschwund entgegen zu wirken.

Ich bin froh, als Vorstand der WGGeG mit dem gesamten Team an der Attraktivität unserer Stadt mitwirken zu können, z.B. mit den Sanierungen unserer Gebäude und der Schaffung von Spielplätzen als Wohlfühloasen für einen Teil unser Bürger der Stadt Görlitz. Unser gesamtes Team ist immer bemüht für unsere Genossenschafter und Mieter ein attraktives und sicheres zu Hause zu bieten. Gerade das ist ja auch jetzt in der Coronakrise durch die Folgen des Lockdowns wieder etwas mehr bei uns allen in den Mittelpunkt gerückt.

Unser wunderschönes Jugendstilkaufhaus bekommt eine zweite Chance, die Stadt Görlitz damit einen weiteren Anziehungsmagnet für Touristen. Ich hoffe, dass da zum Wohle unserer Stadt entschieden wird. Ich würde sehr gern mit meiner Familie auf der geplanten Caféterasse sitzen mit Blick auf das Riesengebirge.

EN/ I grew up in Görlitz and went to kindergarten and school here. Because of the German reunification and the associated economic slump, I had to complete my training in west Germany, but was then able to quickly return to Görlitz and gain a foothold.

Working at WGGeG gave me the chance to develop myself further and to get involved with the people of the city through my work.

I love the historic old town, which is unique, but the outskirts of a city are also important and meaningful. Living in green or quiet residential areas should not be ignored in city policy. This need must also be met in order to counteract the decline in population. As the managing director of the WGGeG I’m happy to contribute to the attractiveness of our city with the entire team, for example with the renovation of our buildings and the creation of playgrounds as oases of well-being for citizens of the city of Görlitz. Our entire team is always trying to offer our members and tenants an attractive and safe home. This has definitely moved a bit more into focus for all of us in the Corona crisis due to the consequences of the lockdown.

Our beautiful art nouveau department store may get a second chance, giving the city of Görlitz another magnet for tourists. I hope that this will be decided for the good of our city. I would very much like to sit with my family on the planned café terrace with a view of the Giant Mountains.

DE/ Als Teenager ging ich zum Einkaufen nach Görlitz.  Damals musste man noch an der Grenzkontrolle vorbei.  Es war meine erste Gelegenheit, das schöne, historische Kaufhaus zu sehen. Bis heute kann ich mich an die schöne Blue Jeans erinnern, die ich dort gekauft habe.  Wenn jemand mir als Kind damals gesagt hätte, dass ich hier mit meiner Familie leben würde, hätte ich es mir gar nicht vorstellen können. Heute ist diese Stadt an der Neiße meine kleine Heimat.

Was ich an der Europastadt Görlitz/Zgorzelec am meisten liebe, ist ihr multikulturelles Gesicht. Ich kann hier Menschen aus aller Welt treffen und kennenlernen.  Die unmittelbare Lage an der Grenze ist zweifellos von Vorteil.  Obwohl ich jetzt in einem anderen Land lebe, fehlt mir nichts, denn ich bin ja gleich nach dem Überqueren der Altstadtbrücke in Polen.

Ich hoffe, dass die Bewohner beider Seiten der Lausitzer Neiße immer mehr zusammenwachsen.  Ich setze auf neue, interessante deutsch-polnische Projekte, die die kulturelle, touristische und wirtschaftliche Entwicklung unserer Region positiv beeinflussen werden.  Ich hoffe, dass in zehn Jahren deutsch-polnische Veranstaltungen an der Tagesordnung sind: gemeinsame Konzerte, Vorträge, Pressekonferenzen, Stadtfeste. Ich hoffe, dass Görlitz in Polen noch bekannter wird, denn die Stadt ist so schön und sehenswert!

EN/ As a teenager I went to Görlitz to go shopping. At that time you had to pass the border control. It was my first opportunity to see the beautiful, historic Kaufhaus department store. To this day I can remember the nice blue jeans I bought there. If someone had told me when I was a child that I would live here with my family, I would never have imagined it. Today this city on the Neisse is my little home.

What I love most about the European city of Görlitz / Zgorzelec is its multicultural face. I can meet and get to know people from all over the world here. The immediate location on the border is undoubtedly an advantage. Although I now live in another country, I am not missing anything, because I can be in Poland right away after crossing the Old Town Bridge.

I hope that the residents of both sides of the Lusatian Neisse will grow closer and closer together. I’m counting on new, interesting German-Polish projects that will have a positive influence on the cultural, tourist and economic development of our region. I hope that in ten years German-Polish events will be the order of the day: joint concerts, lectures, press conferences, town festivals. I hope that Görlitz will become even better known in Poland, because the city is so beautiful and worth seeing!

DE/ Ich bin mit meiner Frau und meinem Sohn aus Bremen nach Görlitz gezogen. Wir haben diese Stadt wegen ihrer Entfernung zu meiner Heimatstadt Bielsko-Biała in Polen ausgewählt. Ich finde die Architektur und Landschaft hier sehr interessant. Ich bin Hobby-Fotograf und für mich ist die Oberlausitz ein fantastischer Ort, um meine Fähigkeiten zu entwickeln.

EN/ I moved to Görlitz with my wife and son from Bremen. We have chosen this city because of its distance from my hometown Bielsko-Biała in Poland. I find the architecture and landscape around here very interesting. I call myself a photographer, and for me Upper Lusatia is a fantastic place to develop my skills.
