DE/ In Görlitz lebt meine Familie, der Großteil meiner Freunde und die Stadt ist Standort des Vereines Kampfkunstschule Phoenix, welchen ich mitgegründet habe. Die Stadt ist Schauplatz der gesamten Vergangenheit meiner Familie. Das Bedürfnis weg zu ziehen hatte ich nie.

Im Vergleich zu anderen Städten ist Görlitz recht überschaubar. Notfalls ist Alles zu Fuß erreichbar. Und obwohl wir überschaubar sind, haben wir alles für eine familiäre Zukunft. Schule, Kino, Schwimmbad, Verein und die ein oder andere Tanzbar/Disco…alles da.

Für die Zukunft wünsche ich mir, dass die Stadt weiter die Bedeutung der Jugendlichen und jungen Menschen erkennt. Diese sind die Zukunft der Stadt und benötigen Gehör, damit sie auch hier bleiben. Zudem hoffe ich, dass sich hier in der Zukunft attraktivere und eine Vielzahl an wachsenden Jobperspektiven entwickelt. Aber die Jugend sollte merken: Es muss nicht jeder studieren. Auch die anderen Berufe sind wichtig.

EN/ My family and most of my friends live in Görlitz and the city is where the Kampfkunstschule Phoenix is, which I co-founded. The city is the setting for all of my family’s past. I never felt the need to move away.

Compared to other cities, Görlitz is quite manageable in size. If necessary, everything is within walking distance. And although we are small, we have everything a family could want. Schools, cinema, swimming pool, clubs and one or the other dance bars / discos…everything is there.

For the future, I hope that the city will continue to recognize the importance of adolescents and young people. These are the future of the city and need to be heard so that they stay here. I also hope that a variety of attractive job prospects will develop here in the future. But young people should realize that not everyone has to study. The other professions are also important.

DE/ Ich bin mit Görlitz irgendwie verbunden seit der Kindheit. Ich komme aus Niesky, bin 2015 nach Görlitz gezogen und traf ein paar Leute, die ich lange nicht gesehen hatte und kam dann irgendwie in die Gruppe ums „Bonehaus“ Obermarkt 26. Ich dachte, hier sind echt spannende, sympathische Leute unterwegs.

Görlitz ist ziemlich weltoffen. Du gehst abends zu einer Veranstaltung (das geht in Görlitz auch mit kleinem Geld) und dann triffst du halt Leute und kommst ins Gespräch mit der halben Welt, wenn du das willst.

Ich liebe die Architektur in dieser Stadt, besonders diesen Gegensatz. Ganz oft sieht alles vorne zur Straße ganz toll aus und hinten sieht es oft noch so aus, als wäre da nie was passiert. Du hast irgendwo ein ganz toll renoviertes Gebäude, aber du siehst wie der Putz schon wieder bröckelt. Wir sind auf dem Weg irgendwo hin und gleichzeitig habe ich manchmal das Gefühl, dass unter der Oberfläche noch irgendwas ist, was nicht gesehen werden möchte und das finde ich an Görlitz sehr liebenswert und spannend.

Das Potenzial ist immer noch da, dass Görlitz halt nicht das zweite Dresden wird oder eine reine Kulissenstadt ist. Ich hoffe, dass Görlitz diesen Spagat schafft – dass wir das Alte erhalten, aber auch, dass die Stadt an sich jünger wird.

EN/ I’ve been connected to Görlitz since childhood. I come from Niesky, moved to Görlitz in 2015 and met a few people I hadn’t seen for a long time and then somehow got into the group around the “Bone House” at Obermarkt 26. I thought there were really exciting, likeable people around here.

Görlitz is pretty cosmopolitan. You go to an event (also possible with little money in Görlitz) and then you just meet people and can get into conversations with half the world, if that’s what you want.

I love the architecture in this city, especially this contrast. Quite often everything looks great at the front of the street and at the back it looks as if nothing has ever changed. You have a beautifully renovated building somewhere, but you can see the plaster beginning to crumble again. We’re on the way somewhere and yet at the same time I sometimes have the feeling that there is something under the surface that doesn’t want to be seen and that’s what I find very endearing and exciting about Görlitz.

The potential is still there for Görlitz not to become the second Dresden, or purely a film backdrop. I hope that Görlitz can manage this balancing act – that we preserve the old, but also that the city itself becomes younger.

DE/ Ich bin vor einem Jahr wegen eines Jobangebots beim hiesigen Klinikum nach Görlitz gezogen. Als Psychiater schätze ich Interaktionen mit meinen Mitmenschen. Ich arbeite gerne mit den Görlitzern zusammen. Hier bin ich nicht “anonym”. Keine Großstadt kann Wärme liefern, so wie Görlitz es tut. Im Allgemeinen kennen sich die Menschen und helfen einander. Die Tatsache, dass sich ein einfacher “Nachmittagsspaziergang” als Reise in ein anderes Land herausstellen kann, nämlich nach Polen, finde ich toll. Ich finde die Nähe dieser Stadt zu der polnischen und tschechischen Grenze total aufregend. Ich genieße auch die Tatsache, dass ich hier viele deutsche und internationale Freunde kennengelernt habe, obwohl Görlitz eher eine kleine Stadt ist. Ich hoffe, dass sich diese Stadt weiterentwickelt, internationale Anerkennung findet und die Menschen weiterhin dazu verleitet, hierher zu ziehen und es selbst zu entdecken.

EN/ I moved to Görlitz one year ago because of a job opportunity at the local hospital. As a psychiatrist, I tend to value human interactions. I enjoy working with the people here. I’m not “anonymous” here. No big city is capable of providing warmth, the way Görlitz does. People tend to know and help each other, and the fact that a simple “afternoon stroll” can turn out to be a trip to another country, namely Poland. I find the proximity of this city to the polish and Czech borders totally exciting. I also enjoy the fact that I met a lot of German and international friends here, despite Görlitz being a rather small city. I hope that this city will keep on developing and getting international recognition, and keep on enticing people to move here and discover it for themselves.

DE/ Ich empfinde mich als Teil von Görlitz, aber genauso gut ist Görlitz ein Teil von mir. Meine Eltern sind 1947 nach dem Krieg hier gestrandet. Dadurch haben sie sich kennengelernt und ich bin hier in Görlitz geboren. Ich bin hier aufgewachsen, in der Schule gewesen und habe hier gearbeitet. Hier habe ich meinen Mann kennengelernt und meine Familie gegründet. Das Schöne ist, meine Kinder leben mit ihren Familien jetzt auch hier in Görlitz. Die Stadt hat mich geprägt und bestimmt viele meiner Entscheidungen beeinflusst.

Ich liebe diese wunderbare Altstadt, die Geschichte, und dass diese Geschichte hier lebendig bleibt und dass es so viele Menschen hier gibt, die sich für ihre Stadt einsetzen. Ich liebe die Vereine, die Menschlichkeit und die Solidarität miteinander und dass es hier noch so viele Möglichkeiten gibt, sich einzubringen.

Ich wünsche mir, dass Görlitz weiter menschlich bleibt. Von den Menschen selber abgesehen, aber auch von der ganzen Politik, von der Wirtschaft her, dass man noch alles miteinander regelt, und wir ein vielleicht noch besseres Miteinander von den Alteingesessenen, den Neuen und den Gästen haben, dass man immer aufeinander zugeht und offen bleibt.

Ich wünsche mir, dass es wirtschaftlich weiter bergauf geht, dass die jungen Leute Perspektiven haben, dass sie weiter in ihrer Heimatstadt bleiben können und nicht entwurzelt werden.

Und ganz wichtig: ich hoffe, dass wir endlich den Weltkulturerbe-Titel kriegen.

EN/ I feel that I’m a part of Görlitz, just like Görlitz is a part of me. My parents were stranded here after the war in 1947. That’s how they met each other and I was born here in Görlitz. I grew up here, went to school and worked here. I met my husband here and started a family. The nice thing is that my children now also live here with their families. The city has shaped me and has definitely influenced many of my decisions.

I love this wonderful old town, the history, and that the history stays alive here and that so many people are committed to their city. I love the clubs, the humanity and the solidarity for each other and that there are still so many opportunities here to be involved.

It’s my wish that Görlitz stays humane. Not just the people themselves, but also the politics and the economy. I hope that things will be decided together, and that we perhaps develop an even better relationship between long-time residents and the new-comers and guests. That we always work together and remain open.

I hope that the economy will continue to improve so that young people have prospects to stay here in their hometown and not be uprooted.

And very important: I hope that we finally get the world cultural heritage title.

DE/ Meine Freundin und ich wollten weg aus Berlin und haben gehört, dass es in Görlitz schön sein soll. Wir haben uns für ein paar Tage umgesehen und sind sechs Wochen später schon in unsere neue Wohnung eingezogen.

>> Ich mag die Internationalität und Offenheit dieser Stadt und ihre kreative Energie. Sie hat so viel Potenzial. Trotz des ruhigen Tempos der Stadt is es hier nicht „tot”, sondern es gibt viele Kulturangebote und Möglichkeiten. <<

Mir gefällt, dass Görlitz durch seine Architektur einen gewissen großstädtischen Flair hat, obwohl es viel kleiner ist als Berlin. Und obwohl Görlitz kleiner und ruhiger ist als Berlin, hat es ein vielseitiges Angebot an Restaurants und Kultur, zum Beispiel das Rabryka und das Kühlhaus. Für mich neu ist, so nah an der Natur zu wohnen und in wenigen Minuten im Wald zu sein oder auch in nicht mal zwei Stunden in den Zittauer Bergen. Auch die Nähe zu Polen und Tschechien gefällt mir als überzeugtem Europäer. Und natürlich auch, dass wir hier eine schöne und bezahlbare Wohnung gefunden haben.

Ich kenne die Görlitzer Vergangenheit nicht im Detail, aber am vielen Leerstand sieht man ja, was hier einmal war. Das kommt so nicht mehr zurück, aber ich sehe viele Möglichkeiten für Görlitz. Ich wünsche mir, dass mehr Menschen das erkennen und hierherkommen, um die vielen leer stehenden Geschäfte und Wohnungen wiederzubeleben. Gerade für großstadt-müde Menschen wie uns hat Görlitz viel zu bieten. Wichtig wäre mir, dass es einen Austausch zwischen Neu- und Alt-Görlitzern gibt, damit eine Veränderung der Stadt nicht als “Übernahme” verstanden wird, sondern als Möglichkeit, die Stadt gemeinsam weiterzuentwickeln.

EN/My girlfriend and I wanted to leave Berlin and heard that Görlitz is nice. We looked around for a few days and six weeks later we were moved into our new apartment.

I like that Görlitz has a certain urban flair due to its architecture, even though it’s much smaller than Berlin. And although Görlitz is smaller and quieter, it has a range of restaurants and culture, for example the Rabryka and the Kühlhaus. What’s new for me, is living so close to nature and being able to be in the forest in a few minutes or in the Zittau mountains in less than two hours. As a European through and through, I also like the proximity to Poland and the Czech Republic. And of course the fact that we have found a nice and affordable apartment here.

I’m not well versed in the city’s history, but the many vacancies show what was once here. It won’t ever come back just like before, but I see many opportunities for Görlitz. I hope that more people will recognize this and come here to revitalize the many empty shops and apartments. Görlitz has a lot to offer, especially for people like us, who are tired of big cities. To me it’s important that there is an exchange between new arrivals in Görlitz and longtime residents so that changes in the city aren’t seen as a “takeover”, but instead as an opportunity to develop the city together.

DE/ Ich bin 1993 zum Studium hergekommen und habe wirklich sehr schöne Erinnerungen an meine Studentenzeit in der gemütlichen alten Villa auf der Goethestraße und im Vogtshof, wo ich gewohnt habe. Mit der Stadt warm zu werden, hat eine Weile gedauert. ’93 war Görlitz auch ziemlich heruntergekommen und durch das Kraftwerk in Hagenwerder auch ganz schön dreckig. Ich habe dann hier aber meinen Mann kennengelernt und bin deswegen hier geblieben.

Inzwischen liebe ich wirklich die Altstadt. Ich bin sehr gerne dort unterwegs, besonders in lauen Sommernächten. Das hat ein sehr besonderes Flair und ich bringe gern Besucher abends dorthin.

Ich habe die Hoffnung, dass die Stadt die Coronakrise gut übersteht und die Läden, Restaurants, und Kulturangebote das alles überleben. Ich wünsche mir, dass es dieses Jahr wieder ein ViaThea gibt. Bei den vielen Initiativen, z.B. auf der Jakobstraße, wo junge Leute viel auf die Beine gestellt haben, hoffe ich sehr, dass die überleben und dass es dort weitergeht.

EN/ I came here to study in 1993 and have really fond memories of my student days: in the cozy old villa on Goethestraße, I lived in the Vogshof.  But it took a while for me to warm up to the city. In ’93 Görlitz was also pretty run down and dirty because of the power plant in Hagenwerder, but then I met my husband here and that’s why I stayed.

I’ve come to really love the old town. I love to be out and about in the old town, especially on mild summer nights. It has a very special flair and I like to bring visitors to the old town in the evenings.

I hope that the city overcomes the Corona crisis and that the shops, restaurants and cultural offerings survive. I hope there will be a ViaThea again this year and that initiatives like young people have started on Jakobstraße will survive and continue.

DE/ Ich bin Masterstudent. Mein Fach ist Biodiversität und Sammlungsmanagement. Ich liebe so viele Aspekte dieser Stadt. Besonders die alten Gebäude, Kunst, Statuen, den Fluss Neiße, den Stadtpark und die Menschen. Die Stadt ist sehr sauber und ruhig. Meine Hoffnung für die Zukunft dieser Stadt ist ein verbesserter Straßenbahnservice für Studenten. Dabei sollten jedoch die einheimischen Bäume für den Klimaschutz und den Erhalt der biologischen Vielfalt berücksichtigt werden. Ich hoffe auf mehr Beschäftigungs- und Forschungsmöglichkeiten für internationale Studierende in der Stadt.

EN/ I am a master’s student. My subject is Biodiversity and Collection Management. I love so many aspects about this city. Especially the old buildings, art, statues, the river Neisse, the city park and the people. The city is very clean and calm. My hope for the future of this city is for an improved tram service for students. But it should take into account the native trees for climate mitigation and biodiversity conservation. I hope for more employment and research opportunities for international students in the city.

DE/Ich bin ursprünglich für einen Arbeitsauftrag nach Görlitz gekommen, habe aber in der Zwischenzeit viele verschiedene Leute getroffen. Einige natürlich durch die Arbeit, andere aber durch meine Gesangsgruppe, den Cactus Club, was für mich eine großartige Möglichkeit war, Leute von hier kennenzulernen. Ich bin wirklich beeindruckt, wie vielfältig diese kleine Stadt tatsächlich ist.

Ich liebe es, dass diese Stadt geteilt ist. Ich meine, einerseits finde ich es traurig für die Stadt. Insbesondere zum Beispiel als sie während der Pandemie die Grenzen schlossen fühlte es sich nicht richtig an. Aber im Allgemeinen ist es echt cool, wie es wirklich zwei Kulturen, zwei Sprachen gibt. Man kann hin und her gehen und völlig unterschiedliche Erfahrungen machen und es gibt Dinge, die man auf beiden Seiten der Stadt genießen kann. So schön es auch ist, es kann auch eine Menge unnötiger Angst und Misstrauen gegenüber dem „Anderen“ hervorrufen. Ich hoffe, die Stadt bricht weiterhin die Mauern zwischen Görlitz und Zgorzelec ein.

EN/I initially came to Görlitz for a work assignment, but in the mean time I’ve met many different people. Some through work of course, but also some through my singing group, the Cactus Club, which has been a great way for me to meet people who are from here. I’m really impressed by how diverse this little city actually is.

I love that this city is split. I mean, on the one hand I think it’s sad for the city. Especially for example, when they closed the borders during the pandemic, it didn’t feel right. But in general, it’s really cool, the way there’s really two cultures, two languages, you can go back and forth and have completely different experiences and there are things to enjoy about both sides of the city. As beautiful as it is, it can also cause a lot of unnecessary fear and suspicion of “the other”. I hope the city continues to break down the walls between Görlitz and Zgorzelec.

DE/ Görlitz ist meine Wahlheimat und sie hat alles, was ich brauche – wunderschöne Natur, einen Bahnhof, um zu meiner Arbeit zu pendeln und natürlich Kultur. Während man durch die Stadt geht, erzählen einem die Gebäude Geschichten und sie wirken auf uns. Ich mag die Nähe zu Polen. Diese Europastadt Görlitz Zgorzelec ist etwas, das man sonst nirgendwo in Deutschland findet – es macht Görlitz besonders.

Ich denke in den nächsten zehn Jahren wird es in dieser Region enorme wirtschaftliche, soziale und politische Veränderungen geben. Görlitz will bis 2030 klimaneutral werden, was großartig ist. Der Weg zu diesem Ziel wird jedoch nicht einfach sein. Wir müssen viele Sachen ändern – die Art und Weise, wie wir pendeln, wie wir einkaufen und wie wir essen.

EN/ Görlitz is my chosen home and it has everything I need – beautiful nature, the train station to commute to my work and also culture. As you walk through the city, the buildings tell stories and they have an effect on you. I like the closeness to Poland. This European city of Görlitz Zgorzelec is something that you can’t find anywhere else in Germany – it’s special to Görlitz.

I think in the next decade there will be huge economic, social and political changes in this region. Görlitz wants to become climate neutral by 2030, which is geat. However, the path to that goal won’t be easy. We will have to change a lot of things – such as the way we commute, the way we shop, and the way we eat.

DE/ Ich bin wegen meiner Arbeit hierhergekommen und inzwischen verbindet mich mit Görlitz die Liebe zur Architektur und der wunderbaren Natur. Ich liebe die fantastischen Häuser mit so vielen Details, die man jeden Tag sieht – man muss nicht danach suchen. Wir sollten es zu schätzen wissen, was wir hier haben, dass eine Stadt mit 56.000 Einwohnern so viele kulturelle Angebote hat.

EN/ I came here because of my work but now I’ve grown to love the architecture and the wonderful nature in Görlitz. I love the amazing houses with so many details that you see every day – you don’t have to look for them. We should appreciate what we have here, that a city of 56,000 has so many cultural offerings.
