DE/ Ich bin vor 12 Jahren hierhergekommen für mein Studium und dann geblieben. Ich bin hier gerne und fühle mich hier angekommen und aufgenommen. Ich liebe die Kultur, die Architektur. Ich liebe diesen zentral gelegenen Stadtpark, finde ich wunderschön. Das habe ich in keiner anderen Stadt bisher so erlebt. Ich hoffe, dass die Kultur, die Läden, die kleinen Einzelhändler – dass sie den Lockdown überleben, gerade auch die Gastronomie, dass das einfach uns erhalten bleibt, weil das echt schade wäre, wenn das so niedergehen würde durch die gegebenen Umstände jetzt gerade.

EN/ I came here for my studies 12 years ago and then stayed. I enjoy being here and I feel happy and welcomed. I love the culture, the architecture. I love the centrally located city park, I think it’s beautiful. I’ve never seen it like this in any other city. I hope that the culture, the shops, the small retailers – that they survive the lockdown, especially the gastronomy, that it’s preserved, because it would be a real shame if it were to go down like that due to the given circumstances.

DE/ Ich bin gebürtiger Görlitzer. Ich habe außer dem Studium meine ganze Zeit hier in Görlitz verbracht, mein gesamtes Berufsleben. Meine Eltern stammen von hier, meine beiden Kinder sind hier geboren, inzwischen haben wir auch einen Enkelsohn.

Ich habe 47 Jahre beim Waggonbau, Bombardier, oder Alstom, gearbeitet.  Was mich besonders verbindet ist, dass ich neben der Arbeit, die ich hier gemacht habe, mich auch sehr stark in der Stadt eingebracht habe und bei vielen Sachen mitgewirkt habe. Ich bin Vorstandsvorsitzender des Tierparkvereins, ich leite die Niederschlesische Theaterstiftung und bin im Fußball auch sehr aktiv. Ich bin hier in der Stadt absolut verwurzelt.

Ich hoffe, dass die Wirtschaft hier sich stabil entwickelt. Die beiden großen Unternehmen Siemens und ehemals Bombardier, jetzt Alstom als größte industrielle Arbeitgeber, dass die weiterhin einen Platz haben, dass die Konzernchefs sich genau überlegen, was sie mit diesen beiden Standorten in Görlitz machen. Aber auch dass wir die entsprechende industrielle Basis haben, damit eben sich Kunst, Kultur, Freizeitmöglichkeiten auf dieser Basis entwickeln können. Ich hoffe, dass die Stadt weiterhin touristisch anziehend bleibt.

EN/ I was born in Görlitz. Apart from my studies, I spent all of my time here, my entire professional life. My parents are from here, my two children were born here, and now we have a grandson, too.

I worked in railway car construction, at Bombardier, or Alstom, for 47 years. What connects me in particular in particular, is that, in addition to the work I did here, I was also very much involved in the city in many ways. I’m the chairman of the Zoo Society, I run the Lower Silesian Theater Foundation and I’m also very active in football. I am absolutely rooted here in the city.

I hope the economy will develop steadily here. The two large companies Siemens and formerly Bombardier, now Alstom, as the largest industrial employers, that they continue to have a place, that the heads of these companies think carefully about what to do with these two locations in Görlitz. But also, that we have the appropriate industrial basis so that art, culture and leisure opportunities can develop. I hope that the city will continue to be a tourist attraction.

DE/ Ich bin seit 15 Jahre hier und es ist irgendwie meine Heimat geworden. So lange war ich noch nie an einem Ort.

Wenn man sich mal traut, los zu machen und nicht auf die Leute hört, die immer sagen, „das geht nicht“, dann kann man hier übelst viel auf die Beine stellen.

Ich wünsche mir, dass die Görlitzer positiver in die Zukunft kucken und dass mehr darüber geredet wird, was möglich statt was nicht geht.

EN/ I’ve been here for 15 years and it has somehow become my home. I’ve never been in one place for so long.

If you dare to get started with an idea and don’t listen to the people who keep saying, “that won’t work,” then you can accomplish a lot here.

My wish is that the people of Görlitz will look more positively into the future and that there will be more talk about what is possible instead of what is not.

DE/ Görlitz ist über die Jahre doch zu einem Stück Heimat geworden.

Ich liebe die Görlitzer Altstadt. Die kleinen Gassen haben ein tolles Flair, besonders im Sommer. Ich mag es, abends Freunde bei einem Glas Wein zu treffen oder einfach durch die Altstadt zu laufen. Ich finde es wundervoll, dass ich problemlos auf die polnische Seite wechseln kann. Das ist ein Stück gelebtes Europa für mich.

Für die Stadt wünsche ich mir, dass sich weiterhin viele junge, kreative Leute ansiedeln. So könnte die wundervolle Altstadt noch mehr belebt werden. Auch wünsche ich mir, dass Fremdenfeindlichkeit, Rassismus und Ausgrenzung jeglicher Art keinen Platz in dieser wundervollen Stadt haben. Wir sind alle Menschen und sollten lernen, trotz Unterschiede gut miteinander zu leben und einander zu respektieren. Ohne Vorurteile…

EN/ Görlitz has become like home to me over the years.

I love the old town of Görlitz. The small streets have a great flair, especially in summer. I like to meet friends over a glass of wine in the evening or just walk through the old town. I think it’s wonderful that I can easily cross over to the Polish side. This is Europe in action.

For the city, I hope that many young, creative people will continue to settle here. This could liven up the wonderful old town even more. I also wish that xenophobia, racism and exclusion of all kinds will have no place in this wonderful city. We are all human and should learn to live well together and to respect one another despite differences. Without prejudices…

DE/ Ich bin hier geboren, aufgewachsen und zur Schule gegangen. Daher sehe mich auch als ein Kind der Stadt, der ich gerne etwas zurückgeben möchte.

Görlitz hat für mich alles was man braucht. Vor allem aber lebt hier meine Familie und ein Großteil meiner Freunde. Zudem liebe ich es für die Görlitzer BC Squirrels und somit meine Heimatstadt auf dem Spielfeld zu stehen.

EN/ I was born here, grew up and went to school. That’s why I see myself as a child of the city to which I would like to give something back.

To me, Görlitz has everything that I need. Most of all, my family and most of my friends live here. I also love to be on the court for the Görlitzer BC Squirrels and for my hometown.

DE/ Görlitz bedeutet Heimat für mich. Zurückkommen. Meine Familie und meine Freunde. Ich war Weltenbummler aber letztendlich hat die Heimat gezogen.

Ich liebe, dass diese Stadt vielfältig ist. Man kann seine Ruhe haben, man kann aber auch in Trubel, man kann was unternehmen. Man kann in die Natur, man kann aber auch viel in der Altstadt machen.

Ich hoffe, dass ich hier alt werde.

EN/ Görlitz means home to me. Coming back. My family and friends. I was a globetrotter but in the end my home called me back.

I love that this city is diverse. You can have your peace and quiet, but you can also be in the hustle and bustle, you can do something. You can go into nature, but you can also do a lot in the old town.

I hope that I grow old here.

DE/ Die Altstadt in Görlitz erinnert mich an die Altstädte in Syrien, so dass ich mich in Görlitz zu Hause fühle. Ich liebe, dass man ein modernes Leben in einer alten Stadt genießen kann. Es ist klein, so dass man schnell Leute treffen und Freunde finden kann, und es ist einfach, sich zu bewegen, zur Arbeit zu gehen oder mein Kind in die Kita zu bringen. Es ist ruhig und das gefällt mir. Ich mag keine überfüllten Städte – zum besuchen sind sie schön, aber ich möchte nicht dort leben. Hier ist die Natur in der Nähe, es ist wie in einem Dorf zu leben, aber mit dem Komfort einer Stadt. 

Ich hoffe, dass hier mehr junge Menschen Chancen finden, zu arbeiten und ein Leben zu beginnen, und nicht wegziehen müssen. Ich hoffe, dass Görlitz so schön bleibt wie es ist und multikulturell und freundlich. 

EN/ The old town in Görlitz reminds me of the old cities in Syria, so I feel at home in Görlitz. I love that you can enjoy a modern life in an old city. It’s small, so you can meet people and make friends quickly, and it’s easy to move around, to get to work or get my child to daycare. It’s calm and I like that. I don’t like crowded cities – they are nice to visit, but I don’t want to live there. Here the nature is near, it’s like living in a village but with the convenience of a city.

I hope that more young people find chances here to work and to start a life and don’t have to move away. I hope that Görlitz stays beautiful the way it is and multicultural and friendly.

DE/ Ich bin letzten Mai wegen einer interessanten Arbeitsmöglichkeit nach Görlitz gezogen und war noch nie hier, wusste also nicht wirklich, was mich erwarten würde, aber ich freute mich darauf, ein neues Land, einen neuen Ort zu erkunden und neue Kollegen und Freunde zu treffen. 

Ich mag den See sehr! Ich fahre gerne Fahrrad, nicht nur in der Stadt, sondern auch in den Bergen an der Grenze zur Tschechischen Republik.  

Ich möchte das kulturelle Leben hier erkunden, daher wünsche ich uns allen, dass diese Pandemie uns bald wieder verlässt, damit wir uns wieder treffen und alles genießen können, was Görlitz uns bieten kann. 

EN/ I moved to Görlitz last May due to an interesting work opportunity and had never been here before, so did not really know what to expect, but I was excited to explore a new country, place and meet new colleagues and friends.

I really like the lake! I am enjoying biking, not only around the city, but also in the mountains at the border with Czech Republic.

I would really like to explore the cultural life here, so my wish for all of us is that this pandemic will leave us soon, so we can meet together again and enjoy all that Görlitz can offer us.

DE/ Ich bin ja Urgörlitzer, hier geboren, und war eigentlich mein halbes Leben auf dem Bau gewesen. Ich habe dadurch natürlich viel mit aufgebaut, vor allem speziell nach der Wende viel in der Sanierung. Danach bin ich ja dann ein bisschen in die Kulturbranche mit reingekommen. Görlitz ist meins, einfach. Ich wollte nie irgendwo anders wohnen.

Seit drei Jahren habe ich mich ein bisschen mit der Fotografie beschäftigt. Ich liebe die Altstadt, Berzdorfer See, das Umland, Königshain…

Für die Stadt wäre es natürlich schön, wenn es weiter in dem ganzen Touristikbereich noch mehr ausgebaut wird. Auch dass sich vielleicht auch mal ein paar größere Firmen hier ansiedeln könnten. Und was ich mir speziell wünsche sind Niederflur-Straßenbahnen.

EN/ I’m a native of Görlitz, I was born here and spent virtually half my life in construction. Naturally I helped to rebuild a lot and did a lot of renovations, especially after the fall of the Wall. After that I got involved in the cultural sector a bit. Görlitz is for me, simple. I’ve never wanted to live anywhere else.

I’ve been doing a bit of photography for three years. I love the old town, Lake Berzdorf, the surrounding area, and Königshain…

For the city, it would be nice if the entire tourism sector was expanded even further. Also that a few bigger companies could settle here. And what I especially wish for are low-floor trams.

DE/ Durch den beruflichen Kontext durfte ich in den letzten Jahren immer wieder Görlitz-Luft schnuppern und habe mich von Mal zu Mal mehr in die Stadt verliebt. Als ich hier dann auch noch einen passenden Masterstudiengang fand, war meine Entscheidung sofort klar.

Was ich an dieser Stadt liebe sind die Menschen. Freundlich, hilfsbereit und fast immer ein Lächeln auf den Lippen. Hier wird nicht lange genörgelt, hier wird angepackt. Eine Idee jagt die nächste.

Für die Zukunft dieser Stadt hoffe ich, dass viele Menschen den Schritt wagen, hierherzuziehen und die Stadt durch ihr Dasein ein Stück bunter, weltoffener und jünger machen.

EN/I’ve been able to experience Görlitz again and again in recent years in a professional context and have fallen in love with the city more and more. When I found a suitable master’s degree here, my decision was immediately clear.

What I love about this city are the people. Friendly, helpful and almost always smiling. Instead of a lot of grumbling, problems are dealt with. One idea chases the next.

For the future of this city, I hope that many people will take the plunge and move here and make the city a bit more colorful, cosmopolitan and younger by being here.
